At this time of year, I find that life picks up pace! Sometimes it feels like I am being swept along with the momentum of the season and whilst I love the festive celebrations and all the Christmas rituals, I need to make sure I take some time to find quiet and stillness otherwise I burn out fast and the celebrations can quickly turn to stress. The season can be full of excitement and joy, but if, like me, you like a routine, this time of year can make us feel unsettled and untethered when there is lots of change and we have to adapt. Humans seek security, and once we have it, we experience joy. But we have to be careful not to attach our security to material, ever-changing outward "things" and instead invest in our grounded, centred sense of self. That doesn't mean being rigid, but instead embracing enough flexibility to move, adapt, and sway with the movement of life. Just like trees do in nature (hence my pic of a tree! Not that I need an excuse for looking at another tree 😂).So in tonight's practise, we will flow through twists, hip-openers, and backbends so we find stability coupled with a sense of ease. We will find stability in the body so we can feel the flow of the breath. As we balance stability and flow, we can burn off the distractions and quieten the mind so we can experience the moment. I love a good side bend! I started out practising predominantly ashtanga, which is a wonderful sequential system of postures that has countless therapeutic benefits. But in the ashtanga sequence, side-bending doesn't really feature anywhere near as much as forward folds and backbends, so when I started regularly side-bending in vinyasa flow classes it was as if a dam had been busted around my torso! I felt like my trunk had a great big yawn! As the temperature drops outside, we are stoking our internal fire tonight with a sequence I have fondly named "Core blimey!" 😅 We'll be taking a tour around the core this evening...Let yourself giggle (it's good for the abs!) as we play around with some funky variations of boat pose and locust to strengthen our front, sides and back body. Enjoy the slow burn in our core as we use gravity and props to create resistance. Shoulderstand (sarvangasana) is one of the oldest and most therapeutic of the postures. According to yoga texts, it can alleviate asthma and allergies, stimulate your thyroid and calm your nervous system. And going upside down can completely shift your perspective! It will heighten your senses and you will naturally tune into the here and now and you'll emerge feeling more settled and focussed. But it's important to set up this posture safely to protect the head, neck and spine so you feel comfortable. This week's theme is 🔥 FIRE 🔥 Inspired by the recent bonfire night, and the beautiful firey coppers, golds and bronze colours in nature at this time of year, which pop in the late afternoon light (this pic is Swinsty reservoir). The night's are drawing in, and we may have turned up the heat at home to stay warm and cosy. But fire can also mean renewal; burning away the old to reveal new growth beneath. We can use our practise to stoke our internal fire to burn off frustration, agitation, apathy, self-doubt to reveal calm, acceptance, courage and resilience. Our internal fire will build power and strength that we can harness to nurture change, forging a new perspective.So tonight, expect some core-work and longer holds, all leading to some lovely yummy releases.
