What is desk yoga?
Many of us spend long periods of time sitting at a desk, but the human body was designed for movement. Sitting for long periods of time can lead to a significant decrease in flexibility and mobility. You may experience joint pain, and overall tightness that makes it harder to move and affects your posture. Many office workers commonly deal with neck and back pain, insomnia, and poor circulation.
Desk yoga, also known as chair yoga, offers a practical solution to many of the side-effects to a sedentary lifestyle.
Benefits for physical wellbeing
- Improved flexibility: desk yoga improves flexibility and joint mobility. This reduces the risk of injuries caused by stiffness and muscle imbalances.
- Better posture: gentle stretches and exercises target the muscles responsible for maintaining good posture.
- Reduce back pain: practicing proper alignment can alleviate back and neck pain and improve overall posture.
- Increased energy and reduced fatigue: short yoga sequences or guided meditation sessions invigorate the body and mind, leading to increased energy levels and enhanced productivity.
- Improved circulation: gentle movements increase circulation and boost the body to release toxins.
Benefits for mental wellbeing
- Stress reduction: mindfulness meditation promotes a state of deep relaxation, reducing stress and anxiety levels. This, in turn, promotes a calm and focused mindset, allowing you to approach tasks with clarity and efficiency.
- Improved concentration, memory and focus: Mindfulness meditation sharpens focus and improves attention span and enhances your ability to concentrate on tasks and minimize distractions.
- Enhance emotional wellbeing: Yoga and meditation practices encourage self-reflection and introspection so you can cultivate a greater sense of self-awareness, emotional stability, and overall well-being.
What can I expect in a desk yoga class?
Each desk yoga class has a holistic approach and has a full-body focus. We use gentle movement to stretch out all the parts of the body where we tend to hold tension from long periods of sitting, such as the neck, shoulders, upper back and hips.
We open with a short mindfulness meditation and we use long, slow deep breaths to bring a sense of calm and peace.
So take a 30-minute break from your desk to stretch and breathe, leaving you feeling rejuvenated and relaxed.
You can purchase the recordings of the LIVE stream classes below. When you “Buy to View” you will be sent a link to a YouTube video, which is yours to keep and practise as many times as you like!
