This beautiful snowy landscape was from our walk at Swinsty Reservoir this week 😍 As the weather outside stays icy, we are going to stoke the internal fire tonight! We will use leg lifts and lunges to build strength and heat in the hips, glutes and legs. Keeping our hips strong can help stabilise the hips and torso and also increase the range of motion of the hips, as well as improve our balance, coordination, and strength...especially important when sliding around on the ice! Happy New Year! May every sunrise bring more promise and every sunset bring more peace.Classes are back from today (Thursday 2nd Jan) so I hope to see you on the mat soon =)Wishing you a 2025 filled with joy, connection, wellness, peace and fulfilment in all the ways that matter most to you. New year, more you. Not a new you, just more of the good stuff inside.Reflect on the past year, honour all that you’ve been through, and remind yourself of those precious and wonderful moments, no matter how big or small. Celebrate your incredible strength and love.Whatever goals, intentions, or resolutions you may or may not have set for this year, let the underlying motivation be to feel happy in your own skin. Not to please other people or to fit in, but to be more you. To be content with who you are. To cultivate this contentment, we have to respond to each moment. And to do that, we have to be aware in each moment. This awareness allows us to choose how to act, feel, respond. It’s not about letting go too quickly or forcing gratitude but rather about embracing the truth that no moment, good or bad, lasts forever. At this time of year, I always find myself reflecting on the year gone by ✨️ The good and the bad. Knowing that when we experience darkness, it makes us appreciate the light. Taking time to feel grateful for all the wonderful people, pets, places, experiences, and things (yes, that's allowed!) that enrich our life. So tonight, as we flow, we will contemplate everything we feel grateful for. Gratitude can have a really powerful effect on our well-being and can help us to shift our perspective to a more positive mindset, and this can make life so much for fulfilling. We will finish with a gratitude meditation to seal in all the positive energy, giving thanks to all the wonders in life that fill up our cup.Thank you body for supporting my practise; thank you mind for listening to the needs of my body; thank you heart for leading me in the right direction and thank you yoga for helping me cultivate the tools and attitude that enrich my life. I love a good twist! I start all my practises (and pretty much all my classes too) with a passive supine twist; for me, it starts to wake up my spine and release tension and my breath gradually deepens, allowing me to make the mental shift and focus my attention on my body and breath - especially important at this time of year when our to-do lists can feel very full and our mind can easily wander away from the moment.Twists have a whole host of physical benefits; they build heat, boost circulation & digestion and tone internal organs, which can be very beneficial at this time of year when it's chilly and we may already be starting to enjoy the festive food!Twists also maintain, restore, and improve the range of motion in the spine, shoulders, and hips. When we live a sedentary lifestyle, it causes the soft tissues to shorten. If we don't stretch them out with twists a few times a week, it can limit mobility in the joints and tighten tissues around the abdomen, ribs, and hips. The great news is, you can twist anywhere! On your yoga mat, on your desk chair, in bed... and as we release tension, we find our stable centre, which we can keep returning to as the world swirls around us. At this time of year, I find that life picks up pace! Sometimes it feels like I am being swept along with the momentum of the season and whilst I love the festive celebrations and all the Christmas rituals, I need to make sure I take some time to find quiet and stillness otherwise I burn out fast and the celebrations can quickly turn to stress. The season can be full of excitement and joy, but if, like me, you like a routine, this time of year can make us feel unsettled and untethered when there is lots of change and we have to adapt. Humans seek security, and once we have it, we experience joy. But we have to be careful not to attach our security to material, ever-changing outward "things" and instead invest in our grounded, centred sense of self. That doesn't mean being rigid, but instead embracing enough flexibility to move, adapt, and sway with the movement of life. Just like trees do in nature (hence my pic of a tree! Not that I need an excuse for looking at another tree 😂).So in tonight's practise, we will flow through twists, hip-openers, and backbends so we find stability coupled with a sense of ease. We will find stability in the body so we can feel the flow of the breath. As we balance stability and flow, we can burn off the distractions and quieten the mind so we can experience the moment.
